Proton VPN is the most credible privacy pick that's also a usable mainstream VPN. Switzerland-based (the country with the strongest privacy framework in Europe), all clients open source on GitHub, built by the team behind Proton Mail. They have a genuinely free tier — not a trial, not a 7-day demo, an actual free product with no logs. Paid plans are competitive but not the cheapest. If your priority is privacy and you also want to stream Netflix, this is the answer.
Vie privée et sécurité
Switzerland is outside the EU, outside Five/Fourteen Eyes, and has stronger constitutional privacy protections than most countries. Swiss data retention law applies, but courts have generally interpreted it conservatively. The no-logs policy is audited annually (Securitum). All apps are open source — you can compile them yourself. Secure Core routes traffic through hardened servers in Iceland, Switzerland, or Sweden before reaching the exit node — useful if you don't trust the destination network.
Vitesse et performance
WireGuard is supported. Speeds are good but slightly behind NordVPN's Lightway and ExpressVPN's Lightway on long-haul. EU-to-EU is typically 75-85% of unprotected. The free tier is much slower (intentionally throttled).
Streaming et torrent
Plus tier streaming works reliably on Netflix US/UK/EU, Disney+, BBC iPlayer. Less consistent than NordVPN — you'll occasionally have to switch servers. P2P supported on dedicated servers, port forwarding available (rare for non-Mullvad). Solid torrenting setup overall.

Free tier exists and works for basic browsing. Plus is the consumer plan (streaming, P2P, all servers). Unlimited bundles VPN with Mail, Drive, Calendar — good value if you'd use those anyway.

Pure speed-chasers (ExpressVPN). Streaming maximalists (NordVPN). Budget shoppers (Surfshark, PIA).
