Overview

ExpressVPN is the premium pick. The fastest, the most polished, and the most expensive. Lightway (their proprietary protocol) is genuinely fast — often beating WireGuard on long-distance routes. BVI jurisdiction is real (no surveillance treaties). RAM-only infrastructure rolled out in 2019. The catches are the price (30-50% more than NordVPN for similar features) and the Kape ownership (same parent as PIA and CyberGhost since 2021).

Privacy & Security

British Virgin Islands incorporation puts ExpressVPN outside Five/Fourteen Eyes — a genuine privacy advantage. The no-logs policy was tested when Turkish authorities seized a server in 2017 investigating an assassination; ExpressVPN had no data to provide. That's the strongest possible validation. RAM-only servers (TrustedServer) wipe on every reboot. Independent audits have been done (PwC, KPMG). Kape ownership: the company has been transparent about it but you should know about it.

Speed & Performance

This is the differentiator. Lightway protocol routinely beats WireGuard on long-haul connections. EU-to-EU speeds typically reach 90-95% of unprotected — measurably faster than NordVPN or Surfshark. If you stream 4K, do video calls over VPN, or care about latency, this is where the price difference shows up.

Streaming & Torrenting

Reliable on Netflix (US, UK, EU regions), Disney+, BBC iPlayer, NPO, ARD/ZDF. P2P is supported on most servers. No port forwarding limits some torrent setups but for casual P2P it's fine.

Pricing

The 2-year plan is the value option but still expensive. Renewal is steep — set a calendar reminder. Worth it only if you actively benefit from the speed advantage.

Who it's for

People who notice the difference between 80% and 95% of native speed. Frequent travelers who connect from far-away regions. Households where someone streams 4K over VPN. Anyone who'll pay for polish.

Who it's not for

Anyone price-sensitive — Surfshark or NordVPN deliver 90% of the experience for half the cost. Privacy-first users (Mullvad). Open-source advocates (PIA).
