CyberGhost

Beginner-friendly with optimized streaming servers. Kape ownership is the asterisk.

Verdict

7.0 / 10Acceptable

Easy to use, but Kape ownership and weaker privacy story make it a hard recommendation.

Pros

  • Most beginner-friendly UI of any major VPN
  • Servers labeled by purpose (streaming, P2P, gaming)
  • Romania jurisdiction is genuinely outside surveillance alliances
  • 45-day refund window is the longest in the market

Cons

  • Kape Technologies ownership and history
  • Closed-source apps
  • Renewal price increases significantly
  • Streaming claims are sometimes overstated in marketing

Overview

CyberGhost is the easiest VPN for someone who's never used one. The UI is friendlier than NordVPN's. Servers are labeled by use case ('Best for streaming Netflix US,' 'Best for torrenting'). The 2-year plan is cheap. The problems: closed-source, owned by Kape Technologies (which has a controversial history), and the privacy story is the weakest of the major VPNs even with Romanian jurisdiction. If a non-technical family member needs a VPN, this works. If you can read this site, you're probably better off with NordVPN or Surfshark.

Privacy & Security

Romania is genuinely outside Five/Fourteen Eyes — that's a real advantage. The no-logs policy was audited by Deloitte (2022). RAM-only servers in 2023. The Kape ownership is the wrinkle: same parent as PIA and ExpressVPN, with the Crossrider/adware history. Closed-source clients mean you trust the audit, not the code.

Speed & Performance

WireGuard speeds are fine — typically 65-80% of unprotected. Not the fastest. Server load can be high on popular European routes during evening hours.

Streaming & Torrenting

Dedicated streaming servers labeled per service work well at first but get blocked periodically (typical for any VPN). P2P-optimized servers exist but no port forwarding. Sufficient for casual streaming and torrenting.

Pricing

2-year plan starts cheap ($2/month). Renewal jumps to monthly rate (~$13). Set a calendar reminder to cancel.

Prices may have changed since last verified. Always check the provider's current pricing page.

Who it's for

Beginners. Non-technical users who want a simple interface. People who want explicitly labeled streaming servers. Anyone who finds the 45-day refund reassuring.

Who it's not for

Privacy-focused users (Mullvad, ProtonVPN). Open-source advocates (PIA, ProtonVPN, Mullvad). Anyone allergic to the Kape ownership context.
